Launched in May 2009, at the same time as the Planck satellite, the Herschel infrared telescope is patiently observing the outer edges of the universe. The European Space Agency has just given its first report on the mission so far.

The first findings from data collected by Herschel have revealed new details about the formation of stars. Scientists have learnt that thousands of distant galaxies show major star production activity.

Furthermore, the space telescope has detected a star that has a big chance of becoming one of the most impressive stars in the Milky Way in a few thousand years. It is already eight to ten times bigger than our own beloved sun!
