EyeDriver! ..oh

Lazy bones, rejoice! Those of us that find the task of steering a car too cumbersome can now relax! For all those people who think that driving a car is a chore, well, the good news is that you don't actually need to "drive" a car any more.

Your eyes can do it for you. If our eyes are the windows to our souls, well, now they are also the drivers of our cars!

Eye Aye, Driver
It's like watching a ghost drive a car. A prototype already exists in which drivers can control the vehicle just by moving their eyeballs. David Latotzky of Freie Universitaet Berlin can turn the steering wheel of his car with his eyes. A piece of software called "EyeDriver" has been developed by a team of researchers and is currently being used to control a car, which they call the "Spirit of Berlin".

The good news is that our eyes can control and drive not just that car. Raul Rojas, also from Berlin's Free University, says that new technology has been developed with which we can steer any car in the same direction as our eyes. Mexican-born Rojas is an artificial intelligence researcher and he and his team presented a working prototype recently.

A Dodge Caravan was used as the prototype and it was navigated easily in open space by its driver, who used only his eyes to control the car. The car's steering wheel turned all by itself! The car was able to reach speeds of up to 50 kph and the next milestone is to double that speed.

The car can also be driven this way in reverse gear. When a driver looks into the rear-view mirror, the car is able to follow his eye movements and move in reverse gear. This should being relief to all those of us who find that reversing a car is more complicated than flying an aeroplane!

This is, of course, just a prototype. The next step is to use this eye-driven car on city roads, where there are many pedestrians, obstacles and distractions. For example, husbands who turn their head to check out a pretty girl will think twice before doing so if they are using this technology. Otherwise, the car could run the pretty thing over before they have the chance to say "Oops!"

Naturally, drivers will not be able to text or talk on mobile phones while they are driving their cars with this technology. These and other such hurdles are preventing the researchers from making this technology commercially available right now.
